About the Inca Trail permits: concern about overuse leading to erosion has led the Peruvian government to put in place a limit on the number of people who are able to hike the Inka trail each season. As a result, advance booking are mandatory, especially during the high season (June to August). Indeed only 500 people can daily use the Inca trail, including guides and porters, so needless to say every entry is highly coveted.
The trail is closed every February for cleaning.
