The Ministry of Culture of Peru (Mincul) announced that on November 17 it will officially release information about the virtual ticket sales process to enter the Machu Picchu 2026 citadel and the famous Inca Trail. This announcement is one of the most anticipated of the year by tourists and travel agencies who wish to plan their visit in advance.

The measure aims to ensure an orderly, transparent, and predictable management of access to Machu Picchu 2026, responding to the high demand this destination generates every season. In this way, the Ministry reaffirms its commitment both to the conservation of cultural heritage and to providing a quality tourist experience.

“We continue developing a simultaneous sales process for entrance tickets to the Inca Trail and the Llaqta of Machu Picchu, in an orderly, predictable, and transparent manner,” indicated the Mincul.

A key announcement for travelers

November 17 will mark a before and after for those planning to travel to Machu Picchu 2026. In previous years, tickets sold out in just a few days, especially those for the Inca Trail, which is limited to approximately 500 people per day, including guides, porters, and cooks.

For this reason, the Ministry seeks to prevent the platform from becoming overloaded and to offer a more organized ticket sales process. This will allow both individual visitors and tour operators to organize their itineraries to Machu Picchu 2026 in advance, including transportation, lodging, and exact entry dates.

In addition, the Mincul reiterated its commitment to the conservation of world heritage and to ensuring that Machu Picchu 2026 remains a unique experience for thousands of travelers.

Inca Trail and Machu Picchu 2026: regulations and access

The Inca Trail and the Machu Picchu citadel maintain strict regulations to protect their historical and natural value. In the case of the Inca Trail, permits are personal and can only be managed through accredited agencies.

Moreover, the Inca Trail is one of the most famous trekking routes in the world, and its access is strictly regulated. It can only be done through travel agencies authorized by SERNANP, such as Inka Trail Expeditions Peru, which handle the permits, provide certified guides, and ensure a responsible experience.

For Machu Picchu 2026, the entrance system based on circuits and fixed time slots is expected to continue. Each visitor must tour the citadel accompanied by an authorized guide, following the assigned routes and schedules. These measures aim to reduce environmental impact and maintain a balance between tourism and preservation.

Additionally, the online ticketing platform managed by the Ministry of Culture will continue to be the only official channel to purchase tickets to Machu Picchu 2026.

What’s New for 2026

The Ministry of Culture also announced ongoing work to open a new Route 6 within the Inca Trail Network, which will diversify the trekking circuits and help reduce congestion along the most popular routes.
This development brings exciting opportunities for hikers looking to explore lesser-known paths on their journey to Machu Picchu.

Practical tips for visiting Machu Picchu 2026

If your goal is to reach Machu Picchu 2026, take these tips into account:

Check official channels on November 17: www.machupicchu.gob.pe will publish the official process.

Decide which type of ticket you need: citadel, Huayna Picchu, or Machu Picchu Mountain.

Hire certified agencies if you plan to do the Inca Trail.

Book your accommodation in advance, especially in Aguas Calientes.

Travel light and prepared: bring comfortable clothing, sunscreen, and suitable footwear.

Plan how to get there: from Cusco, you can take a train or mixed transport to Aguas Calientes, and from there go up by bus or on foot.

With good planning, your experience at Machu Picchu 2026 will be much calmer and more rewarding.

A step towards responsible tourism

The new early sales process for Machu Picchu 2026 is also part of an effort to promote responsible tourism. Limiting daily spots, setting schedules, and digitalizing the ticketing system are measures designed to preserve the archaeological site from the impact of mass tourism.

The Ministry of Culture reminded the public that Machu Picchu 2026 should not only be a tourist goal but also a symbol of respect for cultural heritage. “We reaffirm our commitment to the protection of the country’s heritage, within the framework of open management for citizens,” stated the institution.

In conclusion

November 17 will mark the start of the countdown to Machu Picchu 2026. On that day, the Ministry of Culture will announce the ticket sales process for the upcoming year, offering an ideal opportunity to plan your trip in advance.

This new system aims to make Machu Picchu 2026 an organized, accessible, and sustainable experience, respecting the site’s capacity and ensuring its preservation for future generations.

If you dream of visiting this wonder of the world, mark the date on your calendar, prepare your documents, and stay alert for the official announcement. Machu Picchu 2026 will undoubtedly be a unique opportunity to live one of Peru’s most unforgettable experiences.

Among the many corners surrounding Machu Picchu, there is a spot that goes unnoticed by some, but which plays a key role in the Incas’ journey to the citadel. This place still surprises travelers who decide to explore it, either as part of the Inca Trail or as an additional hike from the sanctuary itself.

Visiting this site not only means walking a historic trail, it also provides the opportunity to observe Machu Picchu from a different perspective. In this blog, you will find practical information to plan your visit: how to get there, what you need to know before climbing, the best time to do so, and useful tips to make the most of your experience.

What is Intipunku?

Intipunku, known as the Gate of the Sun, was an Inca construction that marked the main entrance to Machu Picchu for those arriving via the Inca Trail. Its name comes from Quechua: Inti means “Sun” and Punku means “door,” meaning “Gate of the Sun.”

During the Inca period, it held great cultural and spiritual significance, as from this point one could observe the sunrise aligned with the citadel, especially during the solstices. For the Incas, this phenomenon not only represented an astronomical event but also a sacred moment linked to their religious rituals.

Furthermore, it served a strategic function: it served as a control and surveillance point, as it overlooked the only entrance to Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail. Access to the citadel was thus protected and restricted.

The Intipunku is located on a mountainside southeast of the Machu Picchu citadel, at an altitude of approximately 2,745 meters above sea level. From this point, visitors enjoy a privileged view of the citadel and its surroundings.

It is directly linked to Machu Picchu, as it was the official entrance for those arriving via the classic Inca Trail. Currently, it is one of the most visited attractions by those who want to take an additional hike from the citadel.

How to get to Intipunku

From the citadel of Machu Picchu

If you’re already inside Machu Picchu, you can take a detour and hike to Intipunku. The trail begins at the top of the citadel and is marked. The route is steadily uphill, surrounded by vegetation and with natural viewpoints along the way.

It’s important to note that to access this route, you must purchase the “Route 1-C: Intipunku Entrance” entrance ticket, which is only available during peak season. However, you can reserve it at any time of year, allowing you to secure your visit in advance and guarantee access during peak season.

Along the Inca Trail

Intipunku is also the end point of the famous Inca Trail, considered one of the most impressive trekking routes in the world. Those who complete this experience enter Machu Picchu through this gate, just as the ancient Incas did. There are two options for this option:

Classic Inca Trail (4 days and 3 nights): It begins at kilometer 82 of the railway to Aguas Calientes. After crossing mountains, forests, and archaeological sites, hikers arrive at Intipunku at dawn on the last day, enjoying one of the most special views of Machu Picchu.

Short Inca Trail: It begins at kilometer 104 of the railway and offers a more accessible experience. There are two options:

1-day short inca trail: Ideal for those who are short on time but want to experience hiking the Inca Trail and reaching Machu Picchu via Intipunku.

2-day short inca trail: combine a moderate hike with an overnight stay in Aguas Calientes before entering Machu Picchu the next day.

Both options for the short Inca Trail can be found through our agency, Inka Trail Expeditions Peru, which organizes trips year-round and ensures you enjoy this experience comfortably and safely.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Intipunku is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. During these months, the sky is usually clear and there is less chance of rain, allowing for better visibility of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate. Furthermore, the paths are more solid, making the hike safer.

If you’re looking for an even more special experience, I recommend climbing early in the morning, as there’s a chance to witness the sunrise over Machu Picchu from Intipunku, a unique moment long remembered by travelers. The weather is also cooler in the early hours and the path is less crowded.

Tips for your visit

Visiting Intipunku is an unforgettable experience, but it’s important to be prepared to enjoy it to the fullest:

What to bring: Always bring a water bottle, sunscreen, a cap or hat, and comfortable trekking shoes. This will make the hike much easier and safer.

Precautions: Remember that the trail is constantly incline, so go at your own pace. Don’t forget to hydrate and rest when you need to. It’s also recommended to bring a light raincoat if you travel during the rainy season (November to March).

Incredible photos: Intipunku is one of the best spots to capture Machu Picchu in all its magnitude. For great photos, I recommend visiting early in the morning, when the light is softer and there are fewer visitors. If you bring a camera, make sure you have enough battery and memory.

Frequently asked questions

Manu National Park is a destination shrouded in mystery. Hidden among its rivers and forests are ancient stories, myths passed down by the Amazonian people, and a natural wealth that makes it one of the most surprising places on the planet.

Those who dare to explore it discover that it is not just an immense jungle, but a territory full of secrets, where nature and history coexist in every corner. This blog gathers key information to understand why Manu remains a unique space worth exploring.

Manu National Park of Perú

What is Manu National Park?

Manu National Park is one of the most important protected natural areas in Peru and the world. Located in the Madre de Dios region and part of Cusco, it stretches from the Andes to the lower Amazon. Its area exceeds 1.7 million hectares, allowing for a great diversity of ecosystems: puna, cloud forests, and tropical rainforest.

As a result, it is considered one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, home to thousands of species of plants, birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. In 1987, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Stories and history of the origin of the Manu

Before becoming a protected area, the Manu River was inhabited by various indigenous peoples who found sustenance in its rivers and forests. Chronicles from the first Spanish explorers mention that it was a vast territory, difficult to access, and full of mysteries.

Its name comes from the Manu River, a word that in native languages could mean “great mother” or “protective spirit,” related to the life this river brings to the jungle.

Myths of origin of the inhabitants of Manu

The Amazonian peoples who inhabit Manu preserve myths that explain the creation of their environment. One tells of the spirits of the forest giving early humans the seeds of the trees and forest animals so they would never lack food.

Other stories speak of invisible guardians, known as owners of the forest, who protect game and rivers. These stories are still passed down orally among communities such as the Matsiguenka, Harakbut, and Yine, who maintain a spiritual relationship with the forest.

The Inca conquest in Manu

During the expansion of the Inca Empire, the Manu region was a difficult territory to conquer due to its geography and the resistance of the Amazonian peoples. However, trade routes were established between the mountains and the jungle, known as the Antisuyu, which provided products such as exotic feathers, medicinal plants, and fruits.

The Manu region was part of that border between the Andean world and the Amazon, marked more by trade alliances than by direct conquest.

Expeditions, conflicts and protection of Manu in the 18th century

With the arrival of Spanish colonizers, attempts were made to explore Manu in search of gold and riches. There were failed expeditions and also clashes with the local population, who defended their territories. During the 18th century, access to these lands remained very limited due to the hostile terrain and strong indigenous resistance.

However, these difficulties helped ensure that much of Manu’s natural beauty remained intact until the 20th century, when its conservation began to be considered a national priority. In 1973, the Peruvian government declared it a National Park.

Manu National Park today

Today, Manu is a model of active conservation. It not only houses emblematic species such as the jaguar, the spectacled bear, and the macaw, but also native communities that live within the reserve, maintaining their traditions. Tourist access is regulated to ensure the protection of the ecosystem.

There are restricted areas, tourist zones, and sectors dedicated to scientific research. Visitors can hike trails, birdwatch, navigate rivers, and explore cloud forests and virgin jungles.

Recognitions that make Manu a unique place in the world

Manu is considered one of the most important biosphere reserves on the planet. UNESCO included it on its list of World Heritage Sites in 1987, and it is currently recognized as a living laboratory of biodiversity.

More than 1,000 bird species, 200 mammal species, and approximately 15,000 plant species have been recorded in the area. These recognitions have made Manu a destination for scientists, travelers, and nature lovers.

Manu – Laboratory of biodiversity

Plan your adventure in Manu National Park

How to get from Cusco to Manu?

The trip from Cusco to Manu is made in two sections: first by road, a 7- to 8-hour journey to Pilcopata or Atalaya, and then by river along the Alto Madre de Dios or Manu Rivers, which lead to the authorized areas of the park. Due to logistics, permits, and restrictions within the protected area, it is best to travel with a specialized agency.

At Inka Trail Expeditions Peru, we offer you a complete experience, with transportation, professional guides, and all the necessary authorizations so you can enjoy Manu without worries. Depending on your time, you can choose between:

Entrance tickets to Manu National Park can only be purchased through the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (SERNANP) or through authorized travel agencies in Cusco and Madre de Dios. There are no ticket offices at the entrance, so reservations must be made before your trip.

Recommendations for your trip to Manu

Tips for a safe and authentic experience

Manu is a protected natural area, and visitors must be responsible. It’s best to travel with authorized agencies, as they know the routes and have official permits. Don’t venture out alone, follow the guides’ instructions, and avoid straying from marked trails. Remember that the priority is to conserve biodiversity and ensure the safety of all visitors.

What to bring?

Your packing list should be practical, avoiding unnecessary items:

Lightweight, quick-drying clothing.

Rain poncho or raincoat.

Hiking boots and sandals for resting.

Insect repellent and sunscreen.

Headlamp with extra batteries.

Reusable water bottle.

Personal medications and a basic first-aid kit.

Avoid urban clothing, formal shoes, or makeup, as these are not useful in the jungle.

Manu Park Rules

Entry is regulated, and the following rules must be followed:

Access is only permitted with authorized tour operators.

No littering or leaving behind waste.

No hunting, fishing, or collecting species without permission.

No entry with alcoholic beverages or prohibited substances.

Respect the tranquility of the wildlife by avoiding excessive noise.

Failure to comply with these rules may result in fines and immediate expulsion from the protected area.

Climate of Manu National Park

Manu’s climate changes markedly depending on the altitude. In the highlands, near the Tres Cruces viewpoint and the Kosñipata sector, mornings can be cold, with temperatures dropping to 5°C, especially in winter (June to August).

As you descend into the lowland forest, the environment becomes much warmer and more humid, with daytime temperatures hovering between 25°C and 35°C. Relative humidity is high, and rain is common, especially between November and April, the months of the wet season. This climatic variation is what makes the park’s incredible biodiversity possible.

Best time to visit Manu National Park

The best time to visit Manu is from May to October, when the rains lessen and the trails are more passable. During these months, visibility is best for observing wildlife and taking long hikes. It’s also the ideal time to enjoy the sunrise in Tres Cruces, as the “sea of clouds” phenomenon is more frequent.

During the rainy season, from November to April, although access can be complicated by flooding and mudflats, the jungle is at its most lush and full of life, which can also be attractive to those seeking a more intense experience.

Resting places inside Manu Park

Rest within the park is organized in eco-lodges and authorized camping areas. These spaces aim to reduce environmental impact while providing comfort to visitors. The lodges typically offer simple rooms, limited electricity, and meals based on local products.

Some of them are directly managed by native communities, which adds value to the experience, allowing travelers to live with and learn about Amazonian customs. Falling asleep listening to the sounds of the jungle is one of the most authentic memories of the trip.

Try the local cuisine in Manu

A visit to Manu also includes discovering the culinary riches of the Amazon. The most common dishes served in the lodges and communities are made with fresh, local ingredients. Some of the most notable are:

Juane: rice wrapped in bijao leaves, accompanied by chicken or fish, ideal for excursions.

Amazonian fish: such as doncella, gamitana, or paiche, prepared grilled, in broth, or fried.

Tacacho con cecina: roasted and mashed green plantain accompanied by smoked meat.

Masato: a traditional drink made from fermented cassava, consumed communally.

Fresh fruits: such as copoazú, camu camu, guava, taperibá, and aguaje, which provide energy during the hikes.

Trying the local cuisine is not only part of the experience but also a way to support the communities that manage tourism services within the park.

Hiking mountain trails can be a challenge that goes beyond physical endurance. Every step up or down requires extra effort, and in those moments, a detail as simple as trekking poles can make all the difference. Do they really help, or are they just another accessory?

In this blog, you’ll discover how trekking poles are used, their benefits, and why they’ve become indispensable companions on famous Cusco trails like the Inca Trail or the Salkantay Trek.

Use trekking poles

What are trekking poles?

Trekking poles are accessories designed to provide stability and support during a hike in nature. At first glance, they look similar to ordinary walking sticks, but the difference lies in their durability, their components, and the way they move with your body on uneven terrain.

A trekking pole is made up of four main parts:

The handle, which should be comfortable and ergonomic to prevent blisters or discomfort in the hand.

The straps, which secure the wrist to the pole and allow for better control without the need to squeeze tightly.

The body, made of lightweight materials such as aluminum or carbon fiber, often with adjustable height.

The tip, designed to grip the surface, be it dirt, mud, rock, or snow. Some models include rubber caps for use on asphalt as well.

Knowing how to use trekking poles correctly makes the difference between carrying a simple accessory or taking full advantage of their benefits. While they’re not mandatory on all routes, on long treks like the Inca Trail or the Salkantay Trek in Cusco, they become a great ally for saving energy and avoiding injuries.

Benefits of using trekking poles

Using trekking poles in the mountains isn’t just a fad: they truly make a difference in a hiker’s performance and safety. Furthermore, learning how to use trekking poles correctly allows you to take full advantage of all their benefits.

They improve balance. On steep routes, Inca stairs, or rocky trails, poles help maintain stability. This is especially noticeable on demanding trails like the Wiñay Wayna descent on the Inca Trail.

They reduce the impact on knees and joints. Every step downhill puts pressure on the knees, but with poles, much of that force is distributed to the arms. On long descents on the Salkantay Trek, for example, poles feel like a true lifesaver.

They make ascents and descents easier. They act as extra support when climbing slopes and as a natural brake when descending. On the Choquequirao trek, where the slopes are very steep, this aid becomes almost indispensable.

They increase endurance on long hikes. By distributing the effort between arms and legs, they allow you to walk longer distances without as much physical strain. This is key for multi-day hikes like those in Cusco.

Basic technique: how to use trekking poles

Knowing how to use trekking poles is just as important as carrying them. Incorrect technique can even make you more tired than necessary. Here are the basics to help you get the most out of them:

On flat terrain. Ideally, use them alternately: if you move your right foot forward, the left pole moves forward, mimicking the natural movement of your arms when walking. This maintains a fluid stride.

On climbs. Place the poles slightly forward, using them as extra momentum. This distributes the effort on your legs and helps you gain pace on the slopes. On the Inca Trail, the famous stone stairs become more bearable with this technique.

On descents. Place the poles slightly further forward than your body, as if they were a brake support. This prevents your knees from absorbing all the pressure. On the Salkantay Trek, where descents can last several hours, this tip is essential.

Common mistakes when using trekking poles

Although they seem easy to handle, trekking poles have their tricks. Knowing how to use trekking poles correctly helps avoid discomfort and truly reap their benefits. Here are some common mistakes to avoid:

Not adjusting the height correctly. If the pole is too long or too short, your posture becomes uncomfortable and can cause shoulder or back pain. The basic rule is to hold it on flat terrain with your elbow at a 90-degree angle.

Putting too much weight on your arms. The pole shouldn’t carry your entire body weight; it should simply be a support that eases your walk.

Ignoring the straps. Many beginners don’t use the straps, but they’re key for resting your hands and maintaining control. When adjusted correctly, they allow you to release the pole without it falling to the ground.

Not adapting to the terrain. Some people use the same movement on all sections, but each surface requires a different technique. For example, on steep paths of the Choquequirao Trek, use should be more aggressive, while on flat trails, simply keeping pace is sufficient.

Types of trekking poles

The market offers several types of walking poles, and choosing the right one depends on the type of trip and personal comfort. Of course, in addition to choosing well, it’s also important to learn how to use trekking poles so they perform their function on each terrain.

Telescopic. They can be lengthened or shortened as needed. They are versatile and adapt to different terrains. They are ideal for varied routes such as the Inca Trail, which combines flat, uphill, and downhill terrain.

Foldable. They are lighter and take up little space, making them easy to pack in your backpack. They work very well for those who prefer to walk hands-free on some sections, such as the Salkantay Trek.

One-piece. Although less common, they are more resistant and durable. They are recommended for treks with steep inclines, such as the Choquequirao, where the terrain can be more demanding.

The choice depends on your plans: if you’re doing a short day hike, you might not need the most sophisticated equipment, but for long, multi-day treks in Cusco, it’s worth investing in a good pair of walking sticks.

Frequently asked questions:

How do I choose the correct trekking pole height for my height?
The height should be adjusted so that the arm forms a 90° angle on flat terrain. This avoids overtaxing the joints.

Is it necessary to always use two poles, or can I walk with just one?
Ideally, both are used, as they distribute the effort better, although on narrow trails, many prefer to walk with just one.

How do I adjust the pole straps for comfort and safety?
The strap should fit the wrist without being too tight. This allows for less force on the hands and prevents fatigue on long hikes.

Should trekking poles be used on flat terrain or only in the mountains?
They are also useful on flat terrain, as they help maintain pace and reduce wear on long hikes like the Inca Trail.

Which tips are best: metal, rubber, or with special attachments?
Metal ones work best on dirt and rock, rubber ones on hard or cobblestone surfaces, and special ones are good for snow or sand.

How do I store or transport my poles when I’m not using them on the trail?
If they’re collapsible, they fit easily into my backpack. On trails like Choquequirao, where the path can be narrow, this is a huge advantage.

What’s the difference between telescopic and collapsible poles in practice?
Telescopic poles are more durable and easier to adjust, while collapsible poles weigh less and take up less space.

Can trekking poles be used on short hikes or only on long treks?
They’re useful for both. Even on short hikes like the climb to Huayna Picchu, they provide stability on steep stair sections.

Are trekking poles suitable for all types of weather, even in rain or snow?
Yes, as long as they are fitted with the correct tips. On trails like the Salkantay Trek, they’re very helpful in wet or snowy areas.

How often should I check or change the tips and accessories on my poles?
It depends on usage, but it’s recommended to check them before each trip. On demanding routes like Ausangate, having tips in good condition is key.
