Inca Trail Route Map
The Inca Trail is one of the most iconic and famous hiking routes in the world, with the majestic Inca citadel of Machu Picchu as its final attraction. This route can be done in two main ways: the Classic 4-Day Inca Trail and the shorter 2-day version. Both itineraries offer a perfect mix of nature, archaeology, and culture.
Classic 4-Day Inca Trail
The complete 4-day route is the most popular among adventurers. During this journey, hikers cover approximately 42 kilometers starting at kilometer 82 of the Cusco - Machu Picchu railway. Along the route, you pass through diverse ecosystems, from the Andean highlands to the high jungle. You also pass by impressive archaeological sites such as Llactapata, Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, and Wiñaywayna before reaching the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), from where you'll get your first glimpse of Machu Picchu.
On the map, this route is divided into daily stages, each with its own challenge: The first day involves climbing to the Wayllabamba camp, the second day includes the ascent to the famous Warmiwañusca Pass (Dead Woman's Pass) at 4,200 meters above sea level, the highest point of the trek. The following days allow for immersion in Inca history with stops at archaeological sites before reaching the long-awaited citadel.
Day 1: Cusco – KM82 – Wayllabamba
The first day we begin our hike from KM 82, where the first checkpoint is located, and we'll walk through a mainly flat area to Miskay, where we'll have lunch. Finally, a gradual uphill walk to our first camp in Wayllabamba (3000 m. / 9843 ft.).
Distance covered: 11 km. / 6.8 ml.
Approximate walking time: 5-6 hours
Best of the day: Explore the archaeological sites and contemplate the Andean landscapes.
Day 2: Wayllabamba - Dead Woman's Pass - Pacaymayu
From Wayllabamba we'll walk uphill to reach the highest point of our Classic Inca Trail hike, Dead Woman's Pass (4215 m. / 13829 ft.). From there we'll descend to our camp in Pacaymayu (3600 m. / 11811 ft.).
Distance covered: 10 km / 6.2 ml.
Approximate walking time: 6-7 hours
Best of the day: Pass through the highest point of the Inca Trail and enjoy the wonderful views.
Day 3: Paccaymayu - Runkuraqay Pass – Phuyupatamarka - Wiñayhuayna
From Paccaymayu we'll walk uphill to Runkuraqhay (3750 m. / 12303 ft.). Then a hike to the second highest point on the Classic Inca Trail, Runkuraqhay Pass (3950 m. / 12959 ft.). Afterwards we have to walk a little more to reach our lunch site at Chakiccocha. Finally we'll reach the third Inca ruin Phuyupatamarka, which will also be our last pass (3600 m / 11811 ft.). And we'll descend a little more to reach Wiñayhuayna, the last camp.
Optional: If you still have energy, you can also go to the Wiñayhuayna ruins (2680m / 8792 ft.) before dinner, which is about 5 minutes from the camp.

Day 4: Wiñayhuayna - Sun Gate - Machu Picchu - Cusco
Today we must start our walk very early, after passing the checkpoint, we'll walk to the Sun Gate, where we'll have our first view of the Inca city of Machu Picchu. We'll walk a little more to reach Machu Picchu, we'll pass another checkpoint before being able to enter Machu Picchu. After your visit and guided tour, we'll take the bus to Aguas Calientes, then the train to Ollantaytambo, and finally back to Cusco.
Distance covered: 8.9 km / 5.5 ml.
Approximate walking time: 4-5 hours

Short 2-Day Inca Trail
For those with less time or who prefer a gentler hike, the short 2-day Inca Trail is an excellent option. Although the route is shorter, it still offers spectacular landscapes and an enriching cultural experience. On the map, this route clearly shows the path from the starting point to the arrival at the citadel.
Day 1: Cusco - Chachabamba - Wiñaywayna - Sun Gate - Machu Picchu
This version starts at kilometer 104, where you visit the Chachabamba archaeological complex before climbing to Wiñaywayna (2680m / 8792 ft.), one of the most impressive sites on the Inca Trail. From here, you continue to the Sun Gate to enjoy a first view of Machu Picchu at sunset.

Day 2: Machu Picchu - Cusco
We'll ascend to the Inca City of Machu Picchu by bus from Aguas Calientes. After passing the checkpoint, we'll have our guided tour of the world wonder. Finally, we'll return to Aguas Calientes, board the train back to Ollantaytambo and finally back to Cusco.
Best of the day: This day is completely dedicated to exploring Machu Picchu.
