Bus ride to the trailhead – Punta Carretera

Early in the morning, between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m., we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco in our comfortable private transport. Once the group is complete, we will begin our journey to the mysterious archaeological complex of Waqrapukara. The drive takes approximately 3 hours, during which you'll witness the stunning transformation of the Andean landscape at dawn.

We’ll make a strategic stop in the town of Cusipata, where you'll enjoy a nutritious breakfast to fuel up for the day. After this refreshing break, we continue on to the small village of Santa Lucía, the gateway to our hiking route.

From Santa Lucía, we take a 15-minute drive on a winding road to reach the starting point known as Punta Carretera. Here, we’ll have a short break (about 10 minutes) to finalize preparations. Our guide will give a detailed briefing with important safety and route tips before we begin the trek.

Hiking to Waqrapukara

Once ready, we’ll start our uphill hike to Waqrapukara, which lasts approximately 1.5 hours over a 2.5 km distance. While the trail requires moderate physical effort, the reward is well worth it—breathtaking views of canyons, valleys, and towering Andean peaks surround you throughout the journey. The trail also traverses different highland ecosystems, offering glimpses of native flora and fauna.

Upon arrival, you'll be awe-struck by the majestic presence of Waqrapukara, strategically built on a natural rock formation resembling horns (hence the name: “waqra” = horn, “pukara” = fortress). Your expert guide will explain the historical and spiritual significance of this ancient site and its role in the Inca world, including its architectural features, ceremonial function, and strategic location.

You’ll then have free time to explore the area on your own, take incredible photos, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this remote archaeological wonder.

Box Lunch at the Summit

After exploring the site, we’ll enjoy a tasty box lunch, surrounded by jaw-dropping views of the surrounding canyons and mountains—a truly unforgettable Andean picnic experience.

Return to Cusco

With renewed energy, we’ll begin the hike back down the same trail to Punta Carretera, where our private transport will be waiting. The descent takes about 1 hour and is much easier than the ascent.

Finally, we head back to Cusco, arriving around 6:00 p.m.
